Moving house is an exciting time, but it is also a time of big changes – especially when that move is to a new city. This can be stressful for even the most well prepared, and doubly so for our pets who will likely have a hard time understanding why they’ve been carted up and taken to a strange place. There are, however, a number of things you can do to ease the transition and make sure your furry friends stay happy and healthy in their new home.
Take It Slow
Even for a human it takes some time to get used to fall asleep in a new bedroom, and the same holds true for your pets. Letting them adjust slowly will help prevent them from getting too overwhelmed. Set them up in a quiet room with all the things they need – food, water, a crate/bed, and some of their favorite toys – and let them get accustomed to that first. Try to keep the room quiet and calm, and let your pets explore from this safe camp. They might be hesitant to leave at first, and that’s ok! The important thing is to let them adjust at their own pace.
Bring Some Comforting Items
A few familiar toys from your old home will help your pets feel secure. Avoid the temptation to get of your dog or cat’s accessories when you are getting excited about decorating your own space. In a new house full of strange smells and sights, a favorite toy or that well-worn blanket from their crate will help them feel comfortable and safe.
Stick to a Schedule
One of the most helpful things you can do for your pets is to try to keep their routine as similar as possible to the one they had at their old home. The first couple weeks of settling into a new space can be hectic, but if your cat is used to getting fed and cuddled first thing in the morning then try to stick to that schedule. The same goes for walks for your dog (or cat!), play, and bedtime. Our pets are creatures of habit, and the less you change these habits, the happier they will be.
Let your pet explore their new surroundings at their own pace, give them a comfortable spot to return to when they’re stressed, and stick to a familiar routine, and soon your little buddy will be just as happy as you are to call Thunder Bay home!
